Druids are magicians and judges; Bards are poets and singers; Ovates are physicians and scientists. The modern Ovatian tradition includes all those whose studies have relevance to Druidry. Many Ovates retain the traditional emphasis on the healing skills, but among our Order we often find those whose interests are in wizardly matters such as geomancy, geometry, archaeology, mathematics and what is usually called 'occult science'.
A College of Ovates is being founded in Glastonbury by Mr. John Michell, the internationally renowned scholar, author and mystic, whose wife Denny is the Head of the Western Order. It is expected that the College will attract visiting Ovates (Mr. John Neal, pioneer archaeometrologist and author of Opus 2: all done with mirrors is a possible tutorialist) and include students from both the Druidical and Bardic traditions, as well as from the wider world.
Until the College establishes its own arrangements, announcements relating to it will be posted on this page.
Communication with Mr. Michell (whose work does not allow for copious correspondence) can be established by e-mailing ovates [at] westernorderofdruids [dot] org. We would ask that this method be used only for technical or logistical enquiries relating directly to the foundation of the College.
Enquiries relating to any of Mr. Michell's books should be addressed to him in writing, care of the relevant publisher, who will forward them in due course. We cannot undertake to maintain professional, academic or personal correspondence through this website.
Enquiries about membership of the College should for the time being be made to scribe [at] westernorderofdruids [dot] org. It is not yet possible to make firm arrangements in this respect. Prospective students may leave their particulars but are advised that these should not include any financial data such as credit card numbers.
A member of the Order is attempting to determine whether any demonstrable connection exists between the widely-utilised esoteric properties of certain crystals and their physical, optical, mathematical and other characteristics.
It is already clear that the attribution (e.g. by Cunningham) of esoteric properties is often disappointingly unspecific. Closer definition of the application of crystal energies to healing and to magickal purposes would be very useful.
A particular line of enquiry concerns the applicability or otherwise to the well-known purpose of controlling and directing 'magickal gain', for which terminated quartz is usually specified, of crystallographically comparable substances.
Experienced users of crystal techniques who feel that they might contribute to this research are invited to contact the Scribe.
